The Care and Feeding of Your Lawyer

  1. Pay them for their work - if they are starving, they don't work nearly as well. Failing in your responsibility to your attorney will hurt your business relationship and your access to the lifeline of the lawyer's assistance when things go very bad.
  2. Be honest and provide all information the lawyer needs to know to work for you, including and especially any information that might make you look bad or that the other side is likely to bring up. Going to the doctor for a broken leg, you don't lie to them and say your shoulder is the only thing that hurts. You don't leave out that dirt may have gotten in the wound. Tell your lawyer the truth.
  3. Try hard to listen to the advice your lawyer is giving you. If you are not going to make sure you understand and mostly follow the advice, why get it in the first place?
  4. Be creative in considering solutions to the issues that you are seeking help for. Making other people miserable (even when they "deserve" it) is a lousy use of your life and your lawyer money.
